Fresh eyes – there’s great copywriting and there’s words

There’s great copywriting and there’s words. And so the saying goes, sometimes you just can’t see the wood for the trees.

When you’re running a business, leading busy teams, or your life generally feels like it’s just non-stop 24/7 it is so easy to get caught up in the detail – and lose sight of the bigger picture.

And that’s where a pair of fresh eyes can make all the difference.

At this point I should properly introduce myself. So hi! I’m Sarah, MadeYou’s first dedicated copywriter, and I’ve almost done my first month with Malta’s most exciting new social media marketing business operating from our funky new office on Hal Tarxien, Gudja.

My first job was to take a look at our website

My brief was to update anything that needed updating, and specifically to re-write page content to more accurately reflect the range of services that MadeYou can offer. Until now, Chief Operating Officer Kelly had been doing all the copywriting for the website himself, as well as a trillion other things, along with business partner Chief Executive Officer Luke. Eating and sleeping have clearly been low on their agenda for some time!

And the issue was simple. It wasn’t that the copy was particularly out of date, or anything like that. It was simply that at the time of first writing the content for Kelly was sooooooooo immersed in his own creation that he knew what he knew, but hadn’t always had the time to be able to step outside of himself and write about the business to meet the needs of a new customer who would, by their very nature, know very little or nothing about MadeYou.

So that’s where I came in. An experienced copywriter. And a newbie with fresh eyes and fast fingers on the keyboard.

So I have been busy freshening up content for the main site pages, and working with Kelly and our fab designer Greg to bring to you MadeYou Solutions, our new platform where we will be sharing with you the great work we have done, and, what we have learned along the way. Yes, a picture is worth at least a thousand words, but being able to find the right words to convey the right information and, crucially, in the right tone of voice, is also a must-have for any business or organisation.  Underestimate the value of effective copywriting at your peril!

And finally – and focussing on the value of great design here – perhaps the most obvious thing to update on was our brand imagery on each page. These are the right words which say what the business actually does and our amazing designer Ruben added them to our gorgeous monster brand imagery which he had created when MadeYou was first established.

So there we go. It’s blindingly obvious, but – continuing the metaphor of sight, and, mixing it up a little on the idiom front here too – sometimes a pair of fresh eyes really is just what the doctor ordered.
